WHEN Nicola Benedetti voices concern over the spiralling educational dilemma facing young instrumentalists in Scotland today, she knows it will make headlines. She knows she will be listened to by the movers and shakers. She also knows that she will be repeatedly frustrated by the subsequent lack of meaningful action. The number of drug-related deaths in Scotland soared to 1,187 last year, according to official statistics.

Rise in West Lothian drug deaths

Drug deaths across the Lothians increased by 11 per cent in 2018, accounting for 152 deaths compared to 137 in 2017, according to National Records of Scotland figures.
