Doctor Who has long had connections to Scotland, from Sylvester McCoy's performance as the Seventh Doctor to Ncuti Gatwa becoming the Fifteenth Doctor.
And with David Tennant returning to the show for a series of 60th anniversary specials, we decided to take a look back at some of the most prominent Scottish actors in Doctor Who.

5. Michelle Gomez – Missy / The Master
Glasgow-born actress Michelle Gomez is a more recent addition to the Doctor Who world. Taking on the role of Missy – a female incarnation of the Doctor’s archenemy The Master – from 2014 to 2018. 6. Karen Gillan – Amy Pond
Karen Gillan is another actress who appeared in Doctor Who before she was cast in a starring role. Alongside Peter Capaldi, Gillan appeared in The Fires of Pompeii before she became Amy Pond in 2010. Sparking spin-off series Torchwood, John Barrowman appeared in Doctor Who as Captain Jack Harkness, an rogue time traveller from the 51st century who became immortal. 8. Neve McIntosh – Madame Vastra
Paisley-born actress Neve McIntosh, known for her roles in shows such as Shetland, is unrecognisable as Silurian detective Madame Vastra. An occasional companion to the Doctor, Vastra typically speaks with an English accent, however, when the Twelfth Doctor first regenerated she affected a Scottish accent to communicate with him, to which he replied: “Finally someone who can talk properly.” | Getty Images
