From well known cultural destinations to often overlooked hidden gems, Scotland’s eight cities each have their own unique identities.
They vary in size – and some would say appeal – but they all have more than enough going on to recommend themselves as excellent locations for a weekend away.
So whether you’re interested in immersing yourself in the hustle and bustle of bigger cities or exploring those which are smaller but no less culturally rich, we asked our readers which cities they would recommend for those hoping to enjoy a city break in Scotland.
So – with a few honourable mentions – here are the best Scottish cities for a weekend break according to The Scotsman readers.

5. Dundee
Dundee was somewhat underrated by Scotsman readers for a weekend break, despite the city’s many tourist attractions. From the V&A and the RRS Discovery to the city’s art gallery and its status as a UNESCO Creative City of Design, there are plenty of hidden gems for visitors to uncover with the city’s West End mentioned in particular. | John Devlin

6. Stirling
With a good combination of historical sites to explore as well as a range of bars and restaurants, Stirling was also thought to be an excellent spot for a weekend away. There’s Wallace Monument, Stirling Castle and the Battle of Bannockburn experience for history buffs and Stirling Distillery and more for those looking for a more relaxed break. | Alexis - stock.adobe.com

7. Perth
Located on the banks of the River Tay, our readers say Perth will appeal to those hoping for a quiet weekend away from it all. It is the UK’s first UNESCO City of Craft and Folk Art and its rich character can be found across its museums, art galleries, installations and trails. | RowanArtCreation - stock.adobe.com

8. Dunfermline
Having only been awarded its city status in 2022, Dunfermline was among the least mentioned by Scotsman readers. With that being said, it is at the heart of Scotland’s history with remnants of its storied past to be found around the city – particularly in its Heritage Quarter which includes Dunfermline Palace and Abbey, Abbot House, Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries and the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum. | Journey Dude/Wirestock Creators - stock.adobe.com
