Under the Radar: Supersun

There’s a bright future on the horizon for these Glasgow DIY pioneers, write Olaf Furniss and Derick Mackinnon
Comprising three siblings and their cousin, Supersun began with brothers Adam and Jack Graham testing out the latter’s new recording studio. They were soon joined by their sister Julia and cousin Chris, and in just one year they have made a big impact on Glasgow’s grassroots music scene.
Growing up on a diet of 60s pop and Teenage Fanclub, the band shot to attention with an unorthodox debut, Shine On, released on flexi disc for Record Store Day. Accompanied by a fanzine called The Cabbage, it sold out twice at Glasgow’s Monorail.
Live milestones to date include supporting The Bluetones as well as appearances at Manchester Popfest, Glas Goes Pop and Freakender, not to mention playing the Barrowland Ballroom as part of this year’s Tenement Trail.
Beyond their own music, the band are on a mission to shine a light on young acts in Glasgow and the rest of Scotland, with ambitious plans to develop the zine into a fully-fledged magazine and launch a physical-only label which will release compilations featuring bands in their community.
Supersun headline Stereo in Glasgow on 12 November as part of the first birthday celebration of The Cabbage and will be supported by Fatale, PVC and Floor Dwellers, see www.linktr.ee/supersun.yes
