What is the new series of Shetland about?

At the heart of Shetland series 11 is a historic murder, which is set to impact those connected to the case in the present day. While the show was originally based on Ann Cleeves’ book series, the new season isn’t based on any in particular.

The team are called into investigate when a car, hiding the skeletal remains of an unknown man in the boot, is dredged from the water.

Belonging to Dr Raymond Linden, a respected local GP who fled the isles nine years earlier, the investigation turns to tracking the man down and finding out who the victim is.

While doing so, Tosh and Calder meet the doctor’s mother, Martha, and his brother, Eric. Linden’s mother is convinced something terrible has happened to her son, while his brother is less so.

The investigators also encounter Linden’s ex-wife Emily, who paints a very different picture of her missing husband. Emily shares that he was a troubled man who made her life - and that of their son, Jude - miserable. Elsewhere, Sandy meets Donald Pierce, played by Gregor Fisher, an isolated and overzealous old man who becomes embroiled in the investigation.

As Calder and Tosh work to identify the victim, diving into Linden’s state of mind and the lives of those he left behind, they find themselves in far darker and more dangerous places than they expected.
