The Euro 2024 opener between Scotland and Germany is now just a matter of hours away, and fans are already casting their minds back to some famous clashes against Die Mannschaf.
Believe it or not, it has actually been almost nine years since the side’s last faced each other. Meeting at Hampden Park on a cold September night in Glasgow for a Euro 2016 qualifier, the two teams played out an entertaining five goal thriller that saw then world champions Germany snatch a 3-2 victory in Mount Florida.
Managed by Gordon Strachan, Scotland sat in fourth place in their group and were in dire need of points in the qualification campaign. In an action packed first half, they found themselves behind after 18 minutes when a deflected effort from Thomas Muller put the visitors ahead. However, parity was restored 10 minutes later when Mats Hummels nodded beyond his own goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to send the Hampden crowd wild.
Germany would lead again just after the half hour mark though through a Muller header, only for James McArthur to fire Scotland level on the cusp of half time. When Ilkay Gundogan slotted home the visitors' winner in the second period though, Scotland were unable to respond.
But how many of the starting XI that night are still involved in the Scotland set up? Who has moved on, retired or perhaps even become the face of TV show? Here is what happened to every player that played in Scotland’s last game vs Germany.

5. LB: Charlie Mulgrew
The versatile defender departed Celtic in 2016 and enjoyed spells at Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Fleetwood Town and Dundee United before retiring. He did return to football briefly for a spell at 11th-tier English side, Doncaster City though. He now mainly works in media as a pundit, and has regularly been a guest on Simon Ferry's popular OpenGoal podcast. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group

6. CM: Scott Brown
'Broony' enjoyed a glittering career with Celtic, where he lifted an astonishing 22 domestic trophies. Capped 55 times by Scotland, he had a short stint with Aberdeen in 2021 before announcing his retirement. Named as manager of EFL side Fleetwood Town, he took charge of the Cod Army for 16 months before he was sacked and replaced by Lee Johnson. Appointed at Scottish Championship side Ayr United in January 2024, he led them to a seventh place finish in his debut campaign. | SNS Group

7. CM: James McArthur
Scorer of Scotland's second goal on the night, McArthur was capped 32 times but rarely featured for the national side after 2016 following a request to manager Alex McLeish to be excused from international games due to the management of ongoing back problems. A Crystal Palace stalwart, he spent nine seasons in the EPL with the Eagles before retiring in 2023. He has yet to announce his next steps. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group

8. RW: James Forrest
The 32-year-old Celtic icon was part of Steve Clarke's Euro 2020 squad and came off the bench in the opening match against Czech Republic. However, a lack of game time with his club side saw him fall into the international wilderness in the years that following. His Celtic Park renaissance at the back end of 23/24 saw him land a late call up to the Euro 2024 squad though. Could face Germany again this Friday. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group
