Shetland drug crime: Two men sentenced after being caught with heroin worth £135,000

Police discovered heroin with an estimated street value of £135,000 inside the vehicle of Nigel Scott and Matthew Smith in Lerwick.

Two men have been sentenced to five years in prison after being found with more than 2kg of heroin in Shetland.

Nigel Scott and Matthew Smith, both aged 50, were found guilty of being concerned in the supply of heroin on April 4 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The pair were each sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday, May 6 at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Scott and Smith were caught in 2021 after being stopped by police in the Sandveien area of Lerwick where officers discovered more than 2kg of heroin - with an estimated street value of £135,000 - in their vehicle.

Detective Inspector Calum Reid, North Highland CID, said: “This sentencing reflects our continued commitment to tackling the illegal supply of drugs in the Shetland Isles.

​“Information from the public is crucial in helping us to combat those involved in drugs activity in our communities. It is only as a community working together that we can tackle drug dealing activity.
