UK coronavirus death toll reaches 422 as confirmed cases climb to more than 8,000

Eighty-eight more people have died in the UK, taking the death toll up to 422.

A total of 90,436 people have been tested in the country for COVID-19 of which 8,077 are positive, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.

This comes after the UK woke up to a lockdown following Boris Johnson’s declaration of a "moment of national emergency".

People will only be allowed to leave their home for essential supplies, one form of daily exercise or a walk, medical care or essential work that cannot be completed at home.

In Scotland the death toll has reached 16, and 584 people have tested positive for the virus.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has echoed Boris Johnson’s measures in place to help control the spread of the virus by asking people to stay at home.

“Effectively Scotland is now in lockdown,” Ms Sturgeon said in the statement.

“People have been told they must stay at home. We’ve now set more stringent limits to that.”

Shopping and exercise once a day are permitted, as well getting medicines, the First Minister told MSPs well as travelling to essential work.

“The overall message is very clear, people must stay at home,” the First Minister said.

She went on to set out set which businesses should be shutting their doors during the outbreak.

“It is employers that should be making these decisions. It should not be up to employees to anguish whether or not they should be going into work.”

Pubs, restaurants, cafes, cinemas and gyms have already been told to close by the SNP leader.
