In full: the inaugural Scotland 250 ranking
We look at five companies on the Scotland 250 ranking
Scotland’s economic fortunes are directly related to the success of the thousands of privately owned businesses that span every sector and industry across the country.

The annual Scotsman Insider Scotland 250 ranking recognises high-performing businesses headquartered in the country, with annual turnover of between £20m and £250m, which underpin the Scottish economy through employment, investment and sustained commercial success.
The Scotland 250 programme, which is supported by HSBC, HNH, Foresight, Dentons and RBC Wealth Management, includes exclusive networking events and an awards programme which will recognise outstanding achievements across five categories, including leadership, innovation, growth and business excellence.
Kyle Hamilton, associate director and wealth manager at RBC Wealth Management, says: “RBC Wealth Management has spent decades supporting ambitious SMEs and business owners who are building something extraordinary.
“From manufacturing excellence to property development and professional services, Scotland is home to some of the UK’s most dynamic businesses.”
Many of the 250 will need little introduction and include the likes of McQueens Dairies, House of Bruar, Walker’s Shortbread and Apex Hotels.
Others will be less familiar, but no less important in terms of their contribution to the wider economy.
Among the five businesses profiled here is West Lothian’s Transcal. The name may not ring any bells, yet most of us will have made contact with the seating products made by the Livingston firm for a host of major car manufacturers and rail operators.
Border Biscuits is another firm making the ranking. Lanark-based, it has been enticing sweet-toothed Scots with its wares for more than 40 years, and boasts the UK’s number-one selling chocolate-coated ginger biscuit.
Transcal
Headquartered in Livingston, Transcal has more than four decades of experience in the design, engineering and manufacturing of seat coverings and other structures for a global portfolio of clients in the automotive, aviation, engineering, marine and rail sectors. Since 2011, the group’s rail division has developed a reputation as a leading supplier to the rail transport sector – working with industry leaders including FirstGroup, Alstom and Stadler on a wide range of major projects.
Chisholm Hunter
Glasgow-based diamond, jewellery and watch retailer Chisholm Hunter was founded in 1857. Known in Victorian times as the “Store of 10,000 wonders”, Chisholm Hunter has grown considerably since 1993 when gemmologist Harry Brown bought the company. The business now has a string of stores around Scotland and England, stocking fine diamonds, precious jewellery and prestigious Swiss timepieces. Run by Harry and his wife, Tracey, the business puts relationships, emotion and family values at the heart of the venerable brand. The couple’s children all work for the company.
Border Biscuits
Border Biscuits was founded in 1984 and is based in Lanark. The company’s best-selling Dark Chocolate Ginger has become the UK’s number-one chocolate-coated ginger biscuit – outselling all the own-label varieties combined by more than two to one. Border Biscuits’ range has expanded to encompass popular classics such as Lemon Drizzle Melts and Butterscotch Crunch, as well as chocolate-covered biscuit bars, mini packs and a “sharing” selection. In its last financial year, the firm generated some £28m in turnover.
Affordable Golf
Glasgow-based Affordable Golf is ranked as one of the UK’s top online golf retailers, stocking a full range of golf clubs, equipment and clothing from respected brands including TaylorMade, Mizuno, Callaway, Wilson Staff, Cobra, Adidas, Motocaddy and Titleist. In addition to its online shop, the company operates five large stores across central Scotland – at East Kilbride, Hillington, Irvine, Newton Mearns and Stirling. The stores also have PGA-qualified professionals on hand, delivering golf lessons and offering experienced advice to customers.
Klondyke Fishing Company
Fraserburgh’s Klondyke Fishing Company is one of the UK’s largest pelagic catchers, landing species such as mackerel and herring.
Owned by the Tait family, whose first new-build fishing boat, the wooden-hulled Fertile, went to harvest the seas back in 1962, its fleet includes the Westcon-delivered Taits, and it has ordered a 75.8-metre replacement for the 2006-built Chris Andra from Denmark’s Karstensens. In the year to June 2025, Klondyke Fishing Company turnover rose 32 per cent to £55.1m and pre-tax profit 40 per cent to £36.9m.
