For the first time in a long time, plenty of them were even playing for Scottish clubs while they did so.

Hide AdFifa's Ultimate Team mode will once again honour some of those who stepped up last week – here's a few guesses as to who they might be.

Goalkeeper
Nick Pope, Burnley
No goalkeeper in the Premier League has kept more clean sheets this season than Burnley's Nick Pope.

It's no surprise that he's being widely pushed as England's next number one – he shut the opposition out completely for the 10th time in the 2019/2020 campaign as Burnley beat Bournemouth 3-0.
Defenders
Willy Boly, Wolves
The commanding French defender's return to the Wolves back three has been long-awaited but it certainly hasn't disappointed.

Marquinhos, Paris Saint-Germain
While the superstars at the other end of the park may grab most of the headlines in Paris, Marquinhos has become an instrumental part of the side at the back, marshalling one of the tightest defences in Ligue 1.
He got to spend a little time in the spotlight this week, grabbing two goals in PSG's 4-3 defeat of Bordeaux.
Dan-Axel Zagadou, Borussia Dortmund
Another easily slept-on talent thanks to the form of his attacking team-mates (and one large, blonde team-mate in particular), Dan-Axel Zagadou is one of the most promising young defenders in the game.

Midfielders
Diogo Jota, Wolves
Five goals in four days pretty much tells its own story – Jota has been on excellent form for Wolves this week.
He followed up his European hat-trick with a double against Norwich, melding technical finesse with hardy graft in a way few defences can handle.
Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United
Manchester United's pursuit of the free-scoring Portuguese midfielder felt endless but it looks as though their persistence will pay off sooner rather than later.

Exequiel Palacios, Bayer Leverkusen
One of the most sought-after players in South America, months of speculation were finally put to an end when Palacios joined Bayer Leverkusen last month.
The Argentinian midfielder made his Bundesliga debut in a 2-0 win over Augsburg, giving fans an instant glimpse of the talents that have made him so in-demand.
Serge Gnabry, Bayern Munich
Once a West Brom flop, now an international superstar – Serge Gnabry's status in the world game is now beyond dispute.

Forwards
Lionel Messi, Bareclona
He's Messi. You want Messi. You always want Messi.
Having just struck another four goals in his one-man demolition of poor Eibar, now seems as good a time as any.
Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund
Simply put, Erling Haaland is the success story of football's 2019/2020 season.
Not content with firing in both goals during Dortmund's epic 2-1 defeat of PSG midweek - including a bar-breaking long-range thunderbolt of a strike - he notched in yet another goal in their win over the weekend.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal

Hide AdCan Arsenal hold on to their star forward beyond this season? If they can't offer him Champions League football, would he be better finding someone else who can?
These questions will vex Arsenal, Arteta and the fans for months to come but, for now, Aubameyang is an Arsenal player, and a very fine one at that.
