Highland

Ben Nevis was originally a huge active volcano which exploded and collapsed inwards millions of years ago. Now, it is simply a quintessential example of the beauty of Scotland and a 'must' for hikers in or visiting the country.

Kinsteary, located about three miles from Nairn, dates from at least 1700, but has been owned by just four families in that time. It belonged to the Gordons of Cluny, of Cluny Castle in Aberdeenshire and Hermitage of Braid in Edinburgh, and was originally designed as a quadrangle.
Gordon Cathcart inherited the house in the 19th Century and lived here “alone” – with just 14 full-time staff, with their own servants’ hall, to keep her company.
These days Kinsteary is a more modest home, but its unique layout has suited the current owners perfectly.

One of the most exclusive tartans ever made is the Balmoral, which dates from 1853. Designed by Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert. Featuring grey with red and black, the twisted black and white yarns are said to be reminiscent of the granite seen in Aberdeenshire’s Royal Deeside, where Balmoral is located. This tartan is one of few which can only be worn by members of the Royal family and the Queen’s personal piper with permission from the monarch.

The Gaelic translation for Dunnottar is "fort on the shelving slope" and this is why the fortress has played such a prominent role in Scottish history back in the 18th century with the Jacobite rising because it was a defensive and strategic location. Described as a "ruined medieval fortress" today you can still explore it at the north-eastern coast of Scotland, 2 miles away from Stonehaven.
