Volleyball: McGuigan says City side face toughest test of the season

City of Edinburgh player-coach Barry McGuigan admits his team face the biggest match of their volleyball season ­tomorrow.

The Capital side are unbeaten at the top of the men’s Schelde Sports Scottish League and travel across the city to take on Edinburgh Jets at St Augustine’s High School (2:30pm).

Jets have not lost since the opening day of the season – against City of Edinburgh – and can go top of the table with a victory.

“This could potentially put a hand on the league trophy for us or blow the title chase wide open again,” McGuigan conceded. “Jets are looking very strong and have gathered lots of momentum, only losing one league match so far; that loss came against us way back on game one.

“We have not had an ideal winter break and will be missing three players this weekend due to injury and others that have not returned from their home countries.

“I have no doubt this will be our toughest test and a big crowd is also expected to ‘boo’ us along the way.”

Reigning champions Kilmarnock Blaze are not out of the picture and have lost only twice so far and they will be confident they can turn it around in the second half of the season.

In the women’s first division, second-placed City of Edinburgh face Edinburgh Jets, who are fourth at the halfway stage.
