History made on Scottish-based golf tour amid 50mph winds on 'world class' course

First-time winner at season-ending Grand Final

Alan Tait is planning a different format for the Golfbreaks Get Back to Golf Tour in 2025 after seeing history created as the curtain came down on the latest campaign.

Twelve players teed up in testing conditions at Dumbarnie Links for the season-ending Grand Final and, for the first time, it was won by an amateur.

Step forward Royal Montrose Mercantile member Sean Logue, who battled winds gusting to 50mph to card a two-under-par 70 on the Clive Clark-designed course.

Three professionals - Ethan Hurst (Alyth), Dominic Bradburn (Panmure) and Ian Graham (Crow Wood) - all matched that effort, but, thanks to a better back nine that included an eagle-2 at the 17th, the spoils went to Logue.

“I am absolutely delighted,” said the history-maker. “It was tough weather and that made it absolutely brutal, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing the course and the greens were brilliant. This was just my second game at Dumbarnie after getting a practice round earlier in the week and I love it.”

Tait, who also now runs the Scottish Women’s Amateur Tour and the Cack-Handers Golf Tour, set up the Get Back to Golf Tour during the Covid pandemic to provide playing opportunities for Scottish-based amateurs and professionals.

This year’s schedule comprised 16 events and Logue added: “It has been absolutely brilliant this year. Me and a few of my friends have played on lots of different courses that we would never have managed to play at a good price.”

Tait, who plays in the events himself, was once again delighted to see the season finale take place at Dumbarnie Links.

“A big thank you to general manager David Scott and his team at Dumbarnie who hosted us for the fifth consecutive year and, as usual, the course was world class,” said the former Scottish Boys’ champion.

“The tour will continue next year but will be under a different format, with details being sent out before Christmas.”
