SHE MAY not be a household name just yet, but Irish international striker Stephanie Roche is making headlines after scoring what will surely be the goal of the season.

The 24-year-old striker receives a pass from a team-mate, before flicking the ball over the head of her marker, turning, and rifling the ball high into the net, in Peamount United’s Bus Eireann Women’s National League match against Wexford Youth.

Roche began playing football on the streets of Shankhill, before rules against mixed-gender football ended her brief involvement with Valeview FC. Spells at Cabinteely Girls and Stella Maris saw her move to Dundalk City in June 2007, scoring two goals in a 5-2 win over Waterford Benfica on her debut.

The striker then moved to Raheny United, and went on trial with English FA WSL side Doncaster Belles, before signing for Peamount United, with whom she won the golden boot in her first season, scoring 26 goals for the champions.

She has also represented the Republic of Ireland, scoring on her Under-19 debut - a 3-2 win over Finland - and finishing as the team’s highest goalscorer during her three seasons at Under-19 level.

She scored her first senior international goal in a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan in September 2009, making her first start in the return fixture, scoring the equaliser as Ireland again won 2-1.
