Rangers fans branded head of Spanish FA '˜baldy b*****d*

Rangers fans had a special message for the president of the Spanish FA when he played his final game in professional football.

Luis Rubiales, who won the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation in May 2018, played his last game as a professional footballer in the SPL, as it was back then, for Hamilton Academical in a 4-1 defeat at Ibrox.

Afterwards in the Ibrox press box the defender called time on his football career despite having only signed for Accies earlier that month after he had left Alicante in his native Spain.

In an interview with The Guardian Rubiales recalled being serenaded by the Rangers fans.

“Baldy bastard, what’s the score?” he told Sid Lowe, remembering the game. “I also had a set-to with their captain, which was fun. They named me Accies’ man of the match. And then I went into the press room, said I was retiring and everyone was like... They thought it was a bit weird.”

Rangers captain that day was David Weir, who led a team which included Pedro Mendes, Madjid Bougherra and current Ibrox goalkeeper Allan McGregor. Current Hamilton boss Martin Canning was in the heart of the Accies defence, while Tomas Cerny was in goals and James McArthur in the midfield.

A double from both Kris Boyd and Steven Whittaker gave the home side a 4-0 win. Hamilton’s consolation came from the head of Mark McLaughlin from Rubiales’ corner.

Rubiales will be at Wembley Stadium on Sunday as Spain play England. It was he who sacked Spain manager Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup this summer after he had agreed to take over Real Madrid at the end of the tournament.
