The former Hearts and Dundee winger was part of Alex McLeish’s title winning side which earned the 2003 SPL title by a single goal and recalled the experience when conveying the importance of Rangers’ rout.

Sitting alongside former Ibrox midfielder Alex Rae, McCann said: “I’ve played out there (at Ibrox) in a game where we’ve won a league by one goal. I’m not underestimating the importance of scoring goals and it shows you how important goals can be - and you never know that could be the difference.

"It could be the equivalent of a point and could be the difference.”

The former Rangers duo were also pleased to hear from captain James Tavernier and the half-time team-talk that ensured Rangers continued finding the net against the SPFL Premiership bottom side when he spoke to Rangers TV.

McCann added: “What was said at half-time showed Rangers did respect Hamilton. They were not show-boating, back-heeling or trying to take the mickey - so that shows good respect for the opponent but equally being absolutely ruthless in getting eight goals.

And in Tavernier he added: “He shows maturity, leadership and calmness - not getting too carried away but praising enough. It was a really good job.”

Alex Rae added: “That’s Tavernier got 12 goals in 20 games – remarkable stat, but then add his assists – then Aribo, Arfield, Goldson’s got goals, Roofe, Barker’s cameo – factor all that in and Steven Gerrard will think he’s in a good place.”
