Rangers can learn from last season to keep focus on title task in hand, says Steven Davis

The Light Blues have enjoyed an almost unblemished first half of the season losing just once to Wednesday’s opponents St Mirren earlier this month in the Betfred Cup.

And while on-lookers have been impressed by the form enjoyed by Steven Gerrard’s side, the only question yet to be answered is if they can sustain it throughout the season. A year ago hopes were high around Ibrox after a derby win against Celtic, but the wheels came off for the Gers with a stuttering start to the second half of the season.

That experience will help this year, the veteran midfielder believes, as Rangers aim to go one step better and see through their title tilt which has amassed a 16-point cushion at the top of the SPFL Scottish Premiership.

He said: "We're able to draw on the negative experiences and see whenever we've slipped up and know that you can't afford to take your eye off the ball whatsoever.

"The quality we have throughout the squad and competition for places, everyone is desperate for the jersey and desperate to play and pushing each other in the right direction.

"It's a combination of things, butthere's still a lot of football to be played and a lot of challenges still going to be asked of us.

"And, until we actually have success as a group, then those questions will always be there, so it's up to us to remain focused and keep pushing each other."

Rangers are likely to draw on Davis’ nous for games against St Mirren and Celtic over the coming days with injuries to Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack all but ruling the pair out of action this week with Gary McAllister revealing Arfield has been sent for an ankle scan and urged patience around Jack’s return to the first-team.

And Davis added: “You’ll always miss important players – people like Scotty, if he’s out we don’t know just yet and obviously Jacko has been a big miss for us.

"But thankfully the manager’s continued to try and improve the squad and I think there’s good competition for places, and that will stand us in good stead, but you’re always going to miss important players.”
