Scotland international explains St Mirren transfer appeal as Liverpool loan exit confirmed
The former Aberdeen star has returned to the Scottish Premiership and is looking to get his career back on track.
St Mirren have confirmed the signing of Scotland international right back Calvin Ramsay on loan from English Premier League giants Liverpool.
The Buddies are the fifth club the 23-year-old has made a temporary move to since arriving at Anfield in 2022. The former Aberdeen starlet has spent time with Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, Preston North End and Kilmarnock while making a handful of appearances for the Reds over the past four years.
Ramsay, who has earned one cap for the national team in a friendly defeat to Turkey in November 2022, explained the appeal of joining the Paisley side following the announcement of his move. The defender is hoping to ‘rebuild’ himself back in the Scottish Premiership with his young career having been blighted by injury.
Liverpool defender hoping to ‘rebuild’ career at St Mirren
He said: "I feel really good, really excited. I’ve been in and trained and met all the boys, so yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
"I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again. I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.
"It's a really tough place to come for opposition teams and I think the pitch is really good as well from when I played here. It's a good set up, it's a good club and I'm just excited to get going.
"I spoke to the manager a couple of times before I came up and he got his plan across and what he wanted to do. It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me. I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen."
Ramsay came through the ranks at hometown club Aberdeen and burst on to scene at Pittodrie as a teenager. The 2021/22 campaign was not a successful one for the Dons as they finished 10th in the Scottish Premiership but the right-back was still able to scoop the SFWA Young Player of the Year award.
His impressive form at such a young age saw Liverpool pay an initial fee of £4.2 million plus add-ons to bring him to Merseyside. He made his debut in a UEFA Champions League match against Napoli as a late substitute but has so far been unable to make a lasting impression on the first team at Anfield as he enters the final year of his contract.
St Mirren boss delighted to land Scotland international on loan
St Mirren manager Craig McLeish added: “We’re delighted to have a player of that calibre join us. He brings a lot of quality to the group. He can play that position in a number of different ways and it adds a different dynamic to what we're doing.
"It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group.
"He’s had a lot of game time with Liverpool over pre-season. He's had the full pre-season under their new manager, which he said has been really intense. He said even just normal training sessions have been really intense too, so we've got no real issues there about him coming straight in."
