It was tight, it was nervy, it was long as Israel and Scotland went the full two hours to decide who would move to within one game of the European Championships next year.
Eventually it was decided by Kenny McLean’s decisive spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out that sent Scotland to Serbia for the final next month and kept the Euro dream alive.
Here’s how Steve Clarke’s players rated on the night.
Player ratings scale - 10: One of best performances you've seen. 9: Outstanding. 8: Very good. 7: Good. 6: Average. 5: Poor, 4: Very poor. 3: Terrible day at office. 2: Abysmal. 1: One of worst performances you've seen.
Wanted to partner Lyndon Dykes but replaced him for extra time instead. Clearly eager to make an impression, but it didn't fall for the new Sheffield Wednesday man Photo: Alan Harvey - SNS Group / SFA
On for seven minutes to replace the cramping O'Donnell at the end of extra-time but cool as you like in the shoot-out with the winner. Photo: Alan Harvey - SNS Group / SFA
Hands tied by three key players forced out through COVID and another three with injury he still went for it with two up front. It didn't bring about a goal - but he had the players working for him, no question... and got the country through. Job done, but wasn't pretty. Photo: Craig Williamson - SNS Group
