Skacel in bid to proves his worth for new Hearts contract

The Czech midfielder was an unused substitute in Sunday’s Edinburgh derby victory over Hibs at Tynecastle and has started only once in six games since the Portuguese replaced Jim Jefferies at the start of the month.

He explained today that he is happy in Edinburgh and content with his contract situation having signed a short-term extension through to the next transfer window. At 32, he is approaching the twilight of his career but insisted he will convince Sergio of his worth to Hearts.

“I don’t think too far ahead. I am focused on each game and hopefully I can help the team,” said Skacel. “I believe I can still help and that I can be an important player here. I have a six-month contract at the moment and I will try my best. I want to enjoy my football and help the team and the gaffer.

“I said last year that I wanted to fight for a two-year deal but we signed for six months and I don’t have a problem with that. I have confidence that I can play good football and then we will see what happens. I don’t have anything in my mind about what will happen in January or next year. I will just be trying my best.

“Football is a strange business, you never know what will happen next week. I will stay professional and help the team and then wait to see what happens. Everybody has to prove himself to the new manager but I’m not scared. I hope I can stay fit like I am right now because every week you have to give your best.”
