Hearts trialist Anton Peterlin poised for run-out at Raith

HEARTS trialist Anton Peterlin is set to be given the chance to impress manager John McGlynn in their opening pre-season friendly at Raith Rovers on Saturday.

The American midfielder has been training with the Scottish Cup winners this week and is expected to play some part in the testimonial clash for Rovers stalwart Laurie Ellis at Stark’s Park. Peterlin was brought to the UK by Everton in 2009 following a spell with Ventura County Fusion, who play in the fourth tier in America.

The 25-year-old featured for the Toffees reserves but failed to make the first-team breakthrough at Goodison Park. He went on to join Plymouth before turning out for Walsall last season. Under tighter budget restrictions, new manager McGlynn is looking to bolster his midfield after the club released Ian Black, Adrian Mrowiec, David Obua and Suso Santana. McGlynn last week ran the rule over Rory Boulding but the former Livingston striker has joined Kilmarnock on trial.

Meanwhile, Raith player/manager Grant Murray is weighing up a move for former Blackpool midfielder Stuart Anderson. The Scot, who began his career with Southampton, came on as a substitute trialist in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at home to SPL newcomers Ross County.

Anderson, 26, is a free agent following a stint with English non-league outfit Salisbury City and has had spells with Ross County (on loan), Livingston and Peterhead. Murray is also running the rule over former Celtic striker Greig Spence and ex-Hearts midfielder Jonathan Stewart. Murray said: “I thought the trialists did well against Ross County. Negotiations are still ongoing. We will have a look at players if they become available and if they can strengthen the squad we will be more than delighted.”
