Ex-Celtic keeper Artur Boruc given '˜simply the best' send-off

Fromer Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc was given a raucous send-off in his last appearance for the Polish national team while Simply the Best played over the speaker system.

Poland drew 0-0 with Uruguay at the National Stadium in Warsaw but the moment of the match happened just before half-time when Boruc was given a standing ovation by the fans and guard of honour by his team mates after 65 caps.

Yet, Tina Turner’s hit song, which is seen as the unofficial anthem for Rangers, played over the tannoy as the 37-year-old left the field.

Boruc, who is currently playing for Bournemouth, is most remembered for his spell in Scotland at Celtic where he became known as the ‘holy goalie’.

As well as winning three league titles, two League Cups and a Scottish Cup, Boruc was involved in a number of controversies making him one of the more entertaining individuals in the league at the time.

The Hoops signed him from Legia Warsaw after a loan spell before he moved on to Fiorentina and Southampton.

He appeared at the 2006 World Cup and 2008 European Championships as the nation’s number one despite strong competition.

He said: “My adventure with the national team has been a real rollercoaster ride, but I am happy about what I have accomplished and certainly do not have any regrets.”
