Odsonne Edouard, Celtic, and the reported contract 'ultimatum' issued by French striker

Odsonne Edouard is reportedly open to signing a new contract with Celtic on improved terms – but only if a release clause is included in any prospective offer.

The Bhoys are understood to be confident of retaining the 22-year-old's services until the summer of 2021 regardless of any new deal being agreed.

Despite bracing themselves for a flurry of bids for the striker during the summer transfer window, the only concrete offer for the former Paris Saint-Germain youngster came from an unnamed club in Germany.

This was despite Edouard being linked with clubs including Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Brighton. Indeed, the Frenchman has been linked with numerous clubs on the back of his exploits for the Hoops.

Chances of a new deal?

The Parkhead side has opened talks with the player and his representatives but no agreement has yet been reached.

Speaking 12 months ago Edouard insisted he had to prove himself at Celtic before seeking a move elsewhere but his position apparently changed in January 2020 as it emerged he was open to leaving for pastures new.

Fees in the region of £30 million to £40 million have been bandied about and if Celtic want to quadruple their investment then they may be convinced to strike a deal with Edouard to include the clause.

If he maintains his goalscoring form there are clubs that will have no problem paying a sizeable sum for a proven goalscorer.

Edouard’s current contract expires in 2022 - if Celtic can get him to commit to 2023 or 2024 with a hefty release clause then all parties would likely be satisfied.
