Aberdeen explore European Super League option

The Dons are said to be interested in joining the action as part of a division slightly below elite, and are looking at plans to play in a summer league with teams from the likes of Scandanavia and other European nations.

Though the plans are not currently backed by UEFA or FIFA, they have generated interest from clubs across the continent.

Pittodrie vice-chairman George Yule has said that changes are coming in European football, but he has also emphasised that his side are focusing on their role in Scottish football as part of the SPL.

He said: “The idea of a Super League has been in the public domain for some time and we are realistic enough to accept Aberdeen won’t be among those invited to sit at the top table.

“But change is coming from European football because clubs with money and power want it. We have to look at how we can benefit from any of those changes.

“First though, we have a job to do in the SPL to improve on where have been in recent years and I can assure our fans that is our top priority right now.”

Last month, Aberdeen completed the signing of former Rangers player Gregg Wylde, while 34-year-old midfielder Barry Robson agreed to join the Dons when his contract with Sheffield United expires.
