Scotland’s weather: Warning issued after ‘coldest night for 2 years’

A weather warning has been extended across much of Scotland following the coldest night in the UK for nearly 2 years.

Temperatures plummeted across the country, with a low of -13.5C recorded in the Highland village of Dalwhinnie.

It was -8 and -3 in parts of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

And the cold weather is set to continue with wintry conditions expected continue to grip large parts Scotland today, with the south particularly affected.

A weather warning for snow and ice is in place until 6pm tonight with some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

heavy snowfall is more likely to affect higher routes with lower levels only affected more locally.

In addition, rain may fall onto frozen surfaces across Scotland due to the already low temperatures.

Yesterday those looking to enjoy winter sports faced six-mile tailbacks as they flocked to the slopes to take advantage of the snowy conditions.

Traffic Scotland have urged drivers to check their routes before setting off and to ensure they were carrying emergency supplies.
