Golfer Robert Allenby ‘drugged, robbed and beaten’

Mr Allenby believes he may have been drugged before he was taken from a bar, leaving him with cuts and a deep scrape to his forehead.

The 43-year-old had missed the cut in the Sony Open just hours earlier and was in a wine bar on Friday night when he became separated from his caddie and a friend from Australia, according to the Golf Channel.

Mr Allenby was reportedly beaten, robbed of his mobile phone, cash and credit cards and driven some six miles away and dumped in a park, before a retired military man helped him back to his hotel at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

He said: “I should be OK, just in a lot of pain. I didn’t think I was going to survive this one.

“I was separated from my friend in the bar after we had paid the tab at 10:48pm and he went to the bathroom and next thing you know I’m being dumped in a park miles away.

“I only know this part because a homeless woman found me and told me she saw a few guys pull up and throw me out of the car. That is where I got the scrapes above my eye from the sidewalk.”

Mr Allenby said he realised he was without his phone, wallet or cash and was then harassed by other homeless people in the park.

He added: “The homeless woman got me away from the others and then a retired military guy walking past came to my aid.

“He got me into a taxi and paid for me to get to my hotel and I called police from there. I have his details and will be getting back in touch with him for sure.”

The golfer – who has four PGA Tour victories and has won 22 times worldwide – said he believed he had been drugged in the Amuse Wine Bar in Waikiki Beach and was taken to an underground garage before being thrown in the boot of a car. CCTV footage from the bar is being examined.

Fellow Australian golfer Stuart Appleby said he called Mr Allenby’s hotel room the following morning and found Mr Allenby trying to reconstruct what happened.

He said: “We have some names and numbers and they have some leads to follow up, so I am confident they will get the guys. With the FBI guys involved, they’re the best, the guys on the tour are awesome, and they’ll get to the bottom of it.”

Mr Allenby’s friend Anthony Puntoriero, who was with him before the attack, said: “He’s all right now but we are still talking to detectives.”

Melbourne-born Mr Allenby has never won a major tournament but has been on the PGA Tour for 15 years and won Australia’s “triple crown” in 2005 – the Masters, Australian PGA and Australian Open. He now lives in Florida.
