Scotland weather: Temperatures to drop as low as 2C this weekend

Although various parts of Scotland will be warm throughout the day this week, accompanied by bright skies, some areas will see low overnight temperatures with frost and mist

Wednesday (6 May) will be another dry day everywhere with little or no cloud and unbroken sunshine. It will become warm with winds remaining light, but there will be some cooling sea breezes and highs of around 19C.

What will the weather be like this weekend?

The weekend will turn duller, with rain and cloud. The Met Office outlook for Thursday to Saturday forecast predicts “more cloud around Thursday and Friday but still some sunshine along with scattered showers, heavy in the east, warm. Rain clearing south on Saturday then sunnier, colder.”

Saturday (9 May) will see overcast skies and heavy rain in some areas of Scotland, with minimum temperatures as low as 2C.

Sunday (10 May) will also remain dull, with overcast conditions throughout most of the day in most parts, with lows of around 2C.

Edinburgh will see daytime temperatures of 11C on Saturday, dropping to 2C overnight, with Sunday set to be a little cooler with highs of 7C and a low of 2C.

Elsewhere, Glasgow will see a peak temperature of 14C on Saturday, with a low of 2C. Sunday will again be cooler with a peak of 9C and an overnight temperature of 2C.

Kirkcaldy will reach a peak of 11C in the day on Saturday, dipping to 1C in the evening and overnight, with Sunday seeing a high of 8C and a low of 1C.

What’s the long-range forecast?

Looking further ahead, the Met Office outlook towards 17 May says, “The weather will likely turn more unsettled, with a gradual increase in spells of rain and showers for most, broken by brief sunny or bright spells.”

It is also expected to turn windier in some western regions with cooler temperatures in the north, which will then spread throughout the UK.

The heaviest rainfall will be in southern regions, but the unsettled picture is set to continue until mid-month, where there is a chance that the UK could see some longer, drier spells.

However, this is more likely later in May, beyond this period.

The UK outlook from Monday 18 May to Monday 1 June adds, “Generally a largely unsettled picture is set to continue, with periods of rain and showers broken by some brighter spells whilst staying on the cooler side.”

The heaviest rain is expected in the south, but towards the end of May, there is an increasing chance of longer, drier spells, with temperatures also turning warmer.
