A group of five Sisters from the Carmelite Monastery in Dysart, Fife, cast their vote in the Scottish Parliamentary election.

Alba Party leader Alex Salmond cast his ballot in Strichen, Aberdeenshire.

He told reporters he had put forward a “positive case” for “urgency” on Scottish independence.

Questioned about his feelings on returning to his local polling station with the Alba Party on the ballot paper, Mr Salmond said it was a “different experience, but a familiar one”, adding: “Polling day is always an exciting day.”
