Perth river taxi service '˜a step closer to reality'

THE project to provide Perth with a water taxi service is a step closer after crucial backing was provided.

Local councillors approved the plan to mark an area of land near the Fergusson Gallery for a pontoon.

This would be the first steps in a major project to create enough width for yachts and leisure boats, improving the infrastructure.

There have been two more spots earmarked for pontoons in Willowgate and near Elcho Castle, all of which already have planning permission.

Perth and Kinross council hope to eventually introduce a water taxi service, capable of carrying visitors along the river, with a mind to have a link up with the new V&A in Dundee.

The funding is provided by the UK Government as part of the £600,000 made available for the pontoons scheme.

Members of the common good fund committee unanimously backed the latest proposal, when they were told about the ongoing talks with river craft operators.

Councillor Willie Wilson said: “This is an excellent suggestion and one that has been in the pipeline for a long time. I’m pleased to see that these pontoons will be removed in the winter time. I think that is sensible.”

Councillor Callum Gillies believed that the new riverside service would complement a £1.5 million park and ride scheme that was recently approved for land near Walnut Grove.

“They should really work to help bring people into the city,” he said.

Designers are currently being sought to work on the project and initial designs are expected to be drawn up by the end of October.
