Probe as Saughton inmate dies

A FATAL accident inquiry is to be held after a prisoner held at the city's Saughton jail died.

Mark Roberts died in hospital on Friday after being transferred from HMP Edinburgh. The 35-year-old was remanded in custody on December 16 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for breach of the peace.

A statement from the Scottish Prison Service said: "Police and next of kin have been informed and a fatal accident inquiry will be held."

He was one of three prisoners to die in custody in two days.

Anthony Robertson, 25, died at HMP Barlinnie on January 7. He was remanded in custody on January 3 for alleged assault and robbery.

John Forsyth, 59, died at HMP Peterhead on January 8. He was sentenced to four years and six months for lewd and libidinous practices.

It is understood the men all died of natural causes and there are no suspicious circumstances.
