Watch: 101-year-old Scots woman completes one of Europe's longest zip wires to raise money for NHS

A 101-year-old Scots woman has completed a zip wire challenge to raise funds for the NHS.

Margaret McConchie, of Laggan near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway, travelled 2,690ft down the wire at about 100ft above ground.

The zip wire is one of Europe's longest and people can pick up speeds of up to 45mph.

Her aim was to raise £1,919 - to match the year of her birth - for NHS Charities Together but she ended up raising more than £12,000.

Margaret said the efforts of Captain Tom Moore had inspired her to take the challenge.

The zip wire at Laggan Outdoor in Dumfries is owned by her grandson Duncan McConchie.

She told BBC radio's Good Morning Scotland programme that she completed the journey twice before and found it "quite thrilling".

Margaret said she was keen to do something to help support the people on the frontline who are dealing with Covid-19.

She added: "I've watched from the confines of my home, how inspiring, resilient and compassionate the NHS and key workers in the UK are.

"Whilst we've sheltered inside, they've supported our communities and saved lives.

"Watching Captain Tom earlier this year, inspired me to do something of my own to raise money for NHS Charities Together."

The pensioner completed her challenge on Friday morning with a good view across the Solway Firth despite overcast conditions.

Margaret has five children, 11 grandchildren 16 great grandchildren.
