The King's Speech leads Oscar nominations, with Scots film The Illusionist in the hunt

The King's Speech leads this year's Oscar nominations announced this afternoon in Holywood, with 12 nominations including Best Picture.

Colin Firth, who plays George IV in the film which documents the monarch's battle to deal with a stammer, also recieved a nod for best actor.

Helena Bonham Carter is nominated for best supporting actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth in the film, set in Britain on the cusp of the Second World War, whilst Tom Hooper has also been nominated for best director.

Also among the nominees for best film are Facebook biopic The Social Network, Danny Boyle's adaption of 127 Hours, sci-fi thriller Inception and ballet-drama Black Swan.

Scotland will feature at this year's award, with animation The Illusionist, which opened last year's Edinburgh Film Festival, in contention for best animated feature.

The film, about a French ilusionist who travels to Scotand, was made in Edinburgh and will battle it out with the likes of Pixar blockbuster Toy Story 3 and How To Drain Your Dragon.

Other Brits included in this year's nominees include Welsh-born Christian Bale, who is up for best supporting actor for his role as a boxer-turned-crack addict in The Fighter.

British director Mike Leigh has a nomination for original screenplay for Another Year.

The awards will be held on 27 February.
