The 27-year-old was discovered at the property in north London by emergency services at around 3.54pm this afternoon, according to sources.

It is understood her death was related to a drug overdose.

The London Ambulance Service attended her flat this afternoon but were unable to save her life, sources said.

A press release from her record label, Universal, confirmed the news shortly after.

"We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer," the statement read. "Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."

The singer, who found worldwide fame with her 2006 album Back to Black, has had well publicized problems with drink and drugs.

Last month Winehouse pulled out of her European tour after she was jeered at a show in Serbia when she appeared too drunk to perform.

Winehouse broke through with her Mercury Music Prize-nominated 2003 album Frank, which won critical acclaim for its mix of jazz, funk and soul stylings.

But it was the Motown-influenced Back to Black, produced by Mark Ronson, which catapulted her to stardom and earned the London singer a record-equalling five Grammy awards.
