After rescuing her own dog, Nadia, from the Breasta centre in the Romanian city of Craiova, Gail Souter decided to begin raising funds in order to save other dogs.

At first she was just looking to prolong the dogs’ lives at Breasta, but her work has since found loving owners for 450 dogs.

Not content with this, she vows to keep going in a bid to save all of the animals from ill-treatment and death.

She told STV: ”There is not the same care for animals in Romania as we have. Here we see them as part of the family.

“In Romania there is a lot of cruelty but some shelters are worse than others.

“I got in contact with a local woman to get her out in February. It turned out she had been spayed and sewn up with fish wire.

“She had been battered and was so scared she would pee if you went near her.

“Once I had saved her I wanted to save them all.”
