Piper, wreath and donation to local foodbank as West Lothian village pay tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore

A West Lothian mum organised a floral tribute for the late NHS fundraiser which brought the best out of everyone in the village.

Florist and life long Winchburgh resident Wendy Crawford turned her flower arranging hobby into a business after being struck with Covid last year, leaving her with out work.

She decided to mark the passing of NHS fundraising hero Captain Sir Tom Moore with a wreath on the war memorial in the village.

Wendy explained: “I was just going to do it for free, I didn’t want paying, but someone said ‘why don’t we fundraise for it instead’?”

The fundraiser was put on the community Facebook page and rapidly smashed it’s initial target.

She continued: “People just kept giving.

"We’ve been able to cover the cost of the wreath and we’re giving the extra £200 to the local foodbank.”

Wendy has spoken about her need for the local foodbank after losing her job near the beginning of the pandemic to help her and her four children.

She felt like this was a wonderful opportunity to do something to support it, as well as paying a fitting tribute to Captain Tom.

Winchburgh Gala Queen Emily Walker stepped forward to do the honours and lay the wreath, and local piper Robert Reid offered his services.

The community were advised not to gather to watch the ceremony, and a small video was taken and put on the Facebook page for everyone to see.

Wendy said: “As a village, we do come together quite a lot, it was really lovely.”
