Paramedics attend birthday of girl they saved during birth

Kimberley Cameron was a miracle baby when she was born weighing just 2lb 1oz on February 3 1998.

She was 12 weeks premature and had her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck when she arrived in the world, her breathing stopped and she had to be resuscitated.

Her mum, Anne, 51, had taken ill at home in Tillicoultry and phoned emergency services for help, with paramedics Stuart Urquhart and Graeme Sneddon answering her call.

Anne lost a lot of blood during the birth and both were rushed to Stirling Royal Infirmary.

The mum-of-five, who now lives in Grangemouth, wanted to surprise her youngest daughter for her 18th birthday, as well as thank the two men who saved her life.

Anne said: “She’s been overwhelmed by the surprise. Everyone had a great night, it was absolutely amazing.”

College student Kimberley weighed the same as a bag of sugar when she was born at 28 weeks and Graeme, 47, said it was a great retirement gift to be invited to the party.

He added he had often wondered what had happened to her.

Graeme said: “It was nice to see her grown up and enjoying her life. I remember the job well so it was satisfying and rewarding to find out how she was doing.

“It can be a difficult job - paramedics can get a lot of grief from people but jobs like this remind you why you’re doing the job.

“She gave us a big welcome and thanked us personally.

“I told her she looked a bit different to the last time I saw her. I said ‘you’ve now got lots of hair and I’ve got none.’”

Both Graeme and Stuart have worked as paramedics for more than 20 years, with Graeme retiring through ill health in December.

Stuart, 49, continues to work as a paramedic from Falkirk.
