Maurice Roëves dies aged 83: some of the Glasgow Doctor Who and Tutti Frutti star’s most iconic roles remembered

The actor is famed for his roles in Doctor Who, EastEnders and River City, and had an acting career that spanned more than 50 years

Doctor Who actor Maurice Roëves has died at the age of 83, his agent has announced.

The Sunderland-born actor, who grew up in Glasgow, was best known for his roles in Doctor Who, EastEnders and River City, and was confirmed to have passed away by agents Lovett Logan Associates.

Roëves’ agent announced the news of his death in a statement on Twitter on Wednesday 15 July, writing, “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of our wonderful client Maurice Roëves.

“Maurice had a hugely successful career in both theatre and screen which spanned several decades, starting in his home country of Scotland and moving to London and the United States.

"He was loved by his legions of fans for many of his performances, including Vince Diver in Tutti Frutti, Stotz in Doctor Who, a Romulan captain in Star Trek and Colonel Edmund Munro in The Last Of The Mohicans.

"Maurice loved nothing more than being on set with his fellow actors and worked right up until the end, recently being seen in the BBC series The Nest at the start of this year.

"As well as being a truly dedicated and gifted actor, he was also a real gentleman and a delight to have as a client. We will miss him greatly and our thoughts and love go out to Vanessa and his family."

The cause of his death has not yet been made public.

What roles did Maurice Roëves play?

The veteran actor had a career in acting which spanned more than 50 years, including appearances in blockbuster films and a variety of television appearances.

Raised in Glasgow from the age of seven, Roëves took on many roles over the years, but was known for playing tough characters on screen.

One of his most iconic roles was that of Stotz in the classic Doctor Who series in 1984, in which he captured the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, during one of his adventures.

He also starred in his fair share of films, having played Colonel Munro in the big screen version of The Last Of The Mohicans, Millar in the 1995 film Judge Dredd, and Jimmy Gordon in The Damned United.

Alongside many film roles, Roëves made a name for himself in the world of television, having starred in the likes of John Byrne’s 1980s Scottish BBC series Tutti Frutti, Star Trek: The Next Generation, EastEnders, the TV adaptation of Vanity Fair, Casualty and Holby City.

He was most recently seen in the BBC drama, The Nest.
