'It's just heartbreaking' - Scottish delivery man finds note from elderly customer mourning death of his pet dog

A delivery man who works for Iceland spotted a heartbreaking hand-written message posted in a window from a pensioner who recently lost his dog to cancer.

David Macleod, from Stevenston, has been delivering supermarket goods to the elderly man in question, who lives in West Kilbride, for the last six years.

In the last couple of months, the resident has told the Iceland employee he feels “unwell” since losing his beloved pet Jack Russel.

David has since found a ‘notice’ in windows and on a bus shelter in the town believed to be written by the grief-stricken pensioner saying: “Small dog for company. Lost my dog to cancer, do not feel well without him. Jack Russell Cairn.”

Next to the message is small print saying £30 which David believes to be the price the elderly man is prepared to pay for a new canine companion.

Speaking to The Scotsman, the delivery driver said he is going to make it his mission to organise for a dog to be paired with the lonely resident.

"I’ve been going to this guy’s door for the last six years with his Iceland deliveries and he’s such a nice man,” David said.

"It honestly breaks my heart to hear he’s been suffering like this without his dog who, from what I understand died a few months ago.

"I then couldn’t believe it when people started spotting post-it notes in windows around West Kilbride, and this latest one in the bus shelter from the old guy asking if anyone has a dog he can buy."

David said he has been in touch with pet organisation Give A Dog A Bone and other dog groups with a view re-homing a rescue dog with the elderly man.

"I put up a message on social media telling people what I want to arrange for this elderly man to get a dog, and that I am happy to cover the costs, and I have been inundated with suggestions,” he added.

"I think I am going to leave it to the dog organisations I’ve been in touch with the chose the right one. I know they have experience pairing dogs with elderly people who suffer from loneliness.

"This man is so caring, so it’s good to be doing something to make his year a bit better.”
