An iconic red telephone box located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town has hit the property market with a guide price of £7,500.

The eight foot tall, three foot wide kiosk – which is a listed building- is set to go to auction on Tuesday April 27.

The telephone box is located outside of the National Library of Scotland near some of the Capital’s most famous spots such as the Royal Mile, Greyfriars Kirkyard, the museum and Edinburgh Castle.

The new owner will not be able to alter or move the phone box, however it has the potential to be transformed into anything from a tiny coffee shop, art gallery, or library to a defibrillator or advertisement, as dozens of other kiosks across the UK have been.

It is listed on auction site BidX1 which describes the property investment as: “An iconic piece of British heritage located in the town centre.

“A historic listed "K6" red phone box or “Jubilee” kiosk, commemorating the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.”

In addition to the phone box listed in Edinburgh, ten others are also set to go to auction around the UK in areas such as Devon, Surrey and London.

Originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station and Bankside Power Station which is now the Tate Modern, the red phone box was once voted as one of the top ten icons of Britain alongside the Mini cooper, Concorde and the double decker bus.

Bidding for the phone box commences at 11am on April 27 with more information found on BidX1.
