Hatton woman sets up new business to help those with autism

A Hatton woman has recently set up a new business aimed at helping those with autism.

Nicola Masson recently established ‘More than Autism’ which offers neurodivergent coaching services across the area.

Nicola aims to help those families in Peterhead and the surrounding area who are currently struggling with the lack of services available for neurodivergent patients on the NHS waiting list – currently 850 in Grampian alone – and post diagnosis throughout Scotland.

"I have plans in the pipline to start an online employment club in August, helping people with Autism & ADHD to get into work, return to work after time off, and hope to start webinars and training events before the end of the year to try and raise some awareness of neurodivergent conditions.

“I've been advocating and supporting families on a regular basis for more than 10 years already on a voluntary basis. But after realising I also needed a diagnosis myself, I knew it was time to change career and start using my experience to help others in need of support during what is such a challenging time for neurodivergent people, with waiting lists of up to six years in some areas of Scotland.

"I’m currently on the waiting list for a diagnosis of both Autism and ADHD, alongside 849 others, with an approximately two-year wait to be seen.

“I'm fortunate to be mentored by Edward Fowler, who was previously the service manager for Scottish Autism and opened the first Autism one-stop-shop in Fife. With his guidance, I’ve been able to ensure the services I provide will be of the highest standard when we open for appointments this week.

"If you or your child are one of the 849 currently on the waiting list, I can help you with coaching and putting support in place in the interim while you wait for NHS services. If you're recently diagnosed and unsure what to do next, let me help you work it out. Whatever will make your journey easier, I'm here and happy to help.”
