Funeral held for Scots actor Gerard Kelly

The Glaswegian - best known for his role as Willie Melvin in the popular 1980s comedy City Lights - died aged 51 after a suspected brain aneurism.

Kelly died at West Middlesex University Hospital on October 28 with his family and close friends at his side.

His funeral was held at St Aloysius' Church in the Garnethill area of Glasgow before a private service at Daldowie Crematorium.

Mourners included City Lights co-star and comedian Elaine C Smith, comedian and writer Tony Roper and friend and colleague Andy Gray.

On the back of the order of service there was a picture of Kelly in panto costume with the words "Bye Bye Pals ... See you later".

Kelly was due to star in The Rocky Horror Show at the King's Theatre this month before beginning his regular pantomime run.

A tribute event for the actor is being arranged in conjunction with the theatre.

Gary Barak, spokesman for the family, said: "We request that no flowers are to be sent and instead we are arranging, in conjunction with the King's Theatre, a fitting tribute to Gerard.

"We all think this is exactly what he would have wanted and, as well as the tribute, funds will also go towards the restoration of the King's Theatre in Gerard's name."

The memorial tribute event will take place early next year.

Kelly enjoyed a huge fanbase in Scotland thanks to his portrayal as hapless aspiring author Melvin and roles in Rab C Nesbitt and Scotch And Wry, as well as numerous pantomime performances.

He played a hardman who gave the Mitchell brothers a run for their money in EastEnders and made three appearances in Ricky Gervais's Extras.

Fellow Scots performers Smith, Gray and Gregor Fisher were among those who lined up to pay tribute to Kelly after his death.

After the church service, the funeral cortege was expected to make its way past the King's Theatre.
