Edinburgh shop to give away 500 free ‘goody bags’ to children today

The Day Today made headlines earlier this year by handing out free Covid-19 “survival packs” to those in need.

An independent shop owner in Drylaw, northwest Edinburgh, has announced the business is gearing up to hand out hundreds of freebies for children today.

Zahid Iqbal, who runs Day-Today convenience store at the Drylaw Shopping Centre, said the store has put together 500 goody bags for kids to enjoy after the shop was forced to cancel its plans for a fun day because of the pandemic.

Each goody bag is promised to contain a colouring book set, juice, crisps and sweets, along with face masks and hand sanitizer.

Lucky children will be able to pick up one of the goody bags at the shop today between 2pm and 4pm.

Writing to customers on Facebook, Zahid also announced that the store would be giving out free raffle tickets “to all our lovely customers.”

“Just ask for one when you’re in store,” he wrote, “raffle tickets will be available all day.

Raffle prize winners will be announced on September 21.

“Thanks everyone who has supported us through this pandemic,” Zahid added, “stay safe.”

It is not the first time the store has made headlines for its generosity.

In March, owners forked out a whopping £5,000 to make sure elderly and infirm customers had free access to life’s essentials during the coronavirus outbreak.

The free “survival packs” included one toilet roll, an anti-bacterial handwash, a packet of pocket tissues and one packet of paracetamol.

“We just want to set a good example in this world,” Zahib said at the time.
