Duck builds nest in unlikely spot on Glasgow bridge

COMMUTERS in Glasgow city centre have been keeping a close eye on a resourceful duck which has built a nest in an unlikely position.

A mallard has been determinedly sitting on her eggs in a flower basket perched on a Victorian footbridge - caring little about the hundreds of people walking past each day.

Scotsman photographer John Devlin captured a picture of the duck - which has been named Aggie by passersby - on Sunday.

RSPB Scotland said ducks were known for their enterprising nature when it came to building nests.

“Nests like this are not that uncommon,” said a spokesman. “Every year we receive calls from the public alerting us to nests found in unusual places. We once found a blackbird that had built a nest in traffic lights at quite a busy junction.

“Ducks in particular like to build nests high above waterways to protect their chicks from predators. Other birds, such as herons or buzzards, would think nothing of swooping down and taking a chick.

“Ducks typically have broods of 10 or 12 as nature, unfortunately, dictates that not all of them will survive.

“We would like to remind people to respect the nest and leave the duck in peace,”

The exact location of the nest is not being reported.

Nesting birds are protected under law, with those convicted of harming them facing a fine of up to £5,000 or six months’ imprisonment.
