DEMAND BY UNIONISTS, 19 May, 1950

THE penalisation of Scottish industries by their geographical situation, arising from the absence of flat rate transport charges in necessary cases; the crippling effect of the Catering Wages Act on the Highland hotel and tourist industry; and the fate of Prestwick Airport were among the subjects raised at the annual conference of the Scottish Unionist Association yesterday in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh. The retiring president, Captain JHF McEwen of Marchmont, who presided over the conference, opened the forenoon session with a warning against undue optimism on the one hand or pessimism on the other.

While it was true, he said, that the Unionist Party had made a remarkable advance in the recent poll, they should remember that it was made by their own efforts and not through any weakening in their opponents. They had indeed slowed down the Socialist juggernaut car but they had not stopped it.
