Proud per cent

Recently a reader, using the nom-de-plume of “Scunnered Scot” (Scotsman.com view, 29 March) asked what percentage of the overall student population are Scots, expressing the opinion that his “guess is less than 10 per cent in Edinburgh, St Andrews and Aberdeen”.

As far as Edinburgh is concerned, Scunnered Scot could hardly have been wider of the mark. A simple check will reveal figures from the university’s 2012-2013 Annual Review.

Some 37 per cent of the study body by domicile region on entry is Scottish.

The fact that more than 60 per cent of Edinburgh’s students come from outwith Scotland is surely not a matter of shame, but of pride, that our leading university is able to attract so many able students from England and overseas.
