Letter: No more tartan tat

IT IS pleasing that the deputy leader of Edinburgh City Council is concerned amount the amount of tartan tat in the Royal Mile (your report, 20 April).

However, this is only one aspect of the general eruption of pseudo-Caledonianism, from Highland dress and bagpipes at weddings to the see-you-Jimmy hats and tartan wraps of football fans, to which Scots seem to be turning more and more.

With the possibility of independence in a few years, do we really want to surround, and therefore represent, ourselves with this sort of Brigadoonery?
