Hearing concern

I think the advertisement for hearing aids on page seven of The Scotsman (20 October) strikes a most unfortunate note.

It suggests that deafness is something to be ashamed of. This attitude to deafness is of no service to the huge number of people suffering problems with their hearing and it means that many people are reluctant to admit to difficulties with their hearing.

This reluctance to admit to deafness results in great friction in families when a family
member refuses to admit to their poor hearing. I think it is absolutely disgraceful to infer that visual hearing aids are a
visual stigma.

I have suffered from deafness for more than 25 years and I am always open about my hearing problem; visual hearing aids let people know that you have a hearing problem.

I am very grateful for the
excellent help I have received free of charge from the Audiology Departments of the National Heath Service and I have never found it necessary to seek help from private audiology services.
