Everyday heroes

Gordon Kennedy’s letter (“999 heroes”, 24 December) could not have been more timely. May I add to it another set of “unsung heroes” of today – the power line engineers who work for the electricity distribution networks.

They are on call 24/7 and, due to the nature of the job, usually working in extremes of weather, sometimes in remote places where often they have to use helicopter transport and even skis to reach the cause of trouble.

They deal with a lethal “product” while climbing poles and pylons etc, very often in high winds and blizzard conditions.

To echo Mr Kennedy’s sentiments, it is a pity that no-one has thought of a way of recognising their unique services.
