Whether Professor Peter Higgs accepts a knighthood is entirely up to him (Letters, 17 October). Other recipients appear to come from the ranks of failed politicians often unknown to the general public, mediocre, time-serving actors and questionable celebrities, businessmen (remember Fred Goodwin) and, worst of all, funders of political parties.

Professor Higgs already has a title which indicates his academic ability, and a list of awards including a shared Nobel prize, which recognise his work. Being addressed as Professor is far more important than joining the ranks of the discredited honours system.
