Hundreds join anti-immigration protest following Edinburgh knife incident

Anti-immigration protesters gathered at a block of Edinburgh flats last night following an alleged stabbing on Monday which left two people in hospital.

Protesters said they were demonstrating against illegal immigration and decried Police Scotland and both the Scottish and UK Governments outside Cobbinshaw House in the Calder area on Friday night.

The anti-immigration protesters shouted "stop the boats" and other slogans before marching through the streets to St Nicholas Parish Church , a few streets away, where a small group of counter-protesters held a demonstration.

A large number of Police Scotland officers were deployed, who kept the two groups separate, and no incidents of physical violence between them appeared to have taken place.

It comes after armed police swooped on a tower block in Edinburgh’s Calder Gardens on Monday, March 2 following reports of a man allegedly walking the streets carrying two large knives.

At the time, Police Scotland said: “Two people were injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. A man suffered injuries consistent with being stabbed. A woman suffered a laceration to the head, not believed to be caused by a bladed weapon. Both have since been discharged.”

Mustafa Kokoneh, 23, was later charged and appeared in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday, where he faced eight separate charges, including two counts of attempted murder.
